Spicy Italian Chili

chili

I need to taste something.

After now TEN days of not being able to smell, talk, or really enjoy food, it’s time for some spice. Enter, Phil’s chili.

Phil is a tall, athletic, lanky runner – in other words, my exact opposite – but our taste buds were linked over this recipe. That sounds like we made out. Sorry, Jackie (Phil’s wife…and…sorry, A, I guess). We didn’t.

Anyway. This just got weird.

Here’s a recipe:

Phil’s Spicy Italian Chili

1 lb ground beef (I sometimes use ground turkey)
1 lb Italian sausage (I just use 1/2 lb)
1 onion
1-2 jalapeno peppers
1 tablespoon diced garlic
1.5 tablespoons brown sugar
1 package McCormick chili mix
1 tsp garlic salt
1 tsp black pepper
1 can Grimes spicy hot chili beans
1 can Bush’s chili beans (I just use one can of beans, because I married A. the bean-hater…)
1 can Progresso Tomato Basil soup
1 can milk
1 dash hot sauce
1 tablespoon parmesan cheese

1. Dice onions and peppers. Cook in pan with garlic for 1 minute. Add meat, brown. Add garlic salt, pepper, and brown sugar.
2. In crock pot (I just make it all in one big soup pot – fewer dishes!) : add beans, soup, chili mix, milk, hot sauce, and cheese.
3. Add meat mixture and simmer for desired time.

*add more brown sugar to taste!

I love seeing the seasoning on the rim of the bowl as I’m eating. Oh, it’s tasty. And spicy.

And, because it’s Thursday and pouring rain here, and because I want you to forget about the non-making-out thing, here’s an action shot of Murray being frightened by a chip clip:

Have a crazy Thursday,

LOVE this recipe! Thanks again for cooking it for me and then sharing the marvelous recipe with me:) My Bible Study girls loved it.

Yumm, I love chili. I add a 12oz bottle of beer to mine, it ups the ante a bit and brings out fabulous flavor. I’m wondering what you mean by a “can of milk”? Is this evaporated milk? Can you use the gallon variety and if so, what’s the measurement?

Way to go, Phil! I love me some beans & meat. And J–I have to admit, I had Phil/J makeout images in my head. Hmm. I’ll attempt to erase those.

Abbie – stop thinking scandalous thoughts. Also, it’s a “soup can” of milk. As in, dump out the tomato basil soup, then fill the can back up with milk. It’s very scientific.

People are talking about my chili on J and K’s blog. What next? Jackie and I on the cover of Rolling Stone? I’m famous baby! In seriousness, thanks for the post dear friends. It has re-inspired me to make my own chili again. I’ll let you know how it goes…
