Another Taste: Kitchens

K, here. Welcome to our kitchen, G’s domain (you know, when he’s not in the man chair). It has ample quirky charm, but one thing it lacks is space. It is TINY.  So small, in fact, we have no room for a dishwasher. Sigh. It takes us back to a simpler time….

I do love this corner built-in…..

and a shelf to match (it spans most of the wall over the stove and refrigerator).

G and I are intimately acquainted with this room. In the two years we have lived in the house the kitchen has undergone two transformations. Right after we moved in we painted the cabinets and woodwork a bright white (a huge improvement over the dingy cream color we inherited). This was my original inspiration photo, published in the late Domino Magazine *tear*:

Accordingly, we painted the walls and ceiling a deep blue and the door a fabulous turquoise. I liked it, and I still love this photo, but it didn’t flow with the rest of the house. So, much to G’s dismay, we embarked on our second kitchen makeover. We painted the ceiling (yes, again) white and the walls a silver gray. Don’t think for a second the blue was easy to cover…..Fortunately I’m much happier with this version of the kitchen as I had to make a solemn vow that we would never paint it again.

J, here. As I explained yesterday, our kitchen, living room, and dining room are all pretty much open to each other. Standing in the living room, here is the view of my second favorite place to be (first favorite is sleeping in my bed…):

I am seriously sorry about the dog. He’s everywhere.

Anyway, I love the maple cabinets in our kitchen. The light wood gives our rather small first floor a breath of space and light. While a lot of our finishes are neutral (to a fault?), I adore my shiny red Kitchen Aid stand mixer and like to add pops of red where I can.

See the hexagonal tile backsplash? That’s new, and I love it. I’ll post more on that project in the near future. Ladies, marry a man who knows his way around a spackling knife. That’s all I’m sayin.

What do you love most about your kitchen?

Happy Cooking,

  1. Cute!! J – we are thinking of back splashing our kitchen sometime. We might have to call you!

We are also thinking of doing a backsplash in our kitchen. We did a small tiling project last year-a perfect little 2×3 rectangle of floor and now “we” believe we are experts {*dangerous}. I think my favorite thing about my kitchen is not really how it looks, but the fact that that is where EVERYBODY hangs out. I’ve always loved that.

    I want a backsplash. Hmm. Future endeavors…

I love my KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer as well. I also adore my dishware and am eager to use it at any (and all) occasions. This is a dinner invite. Please come over soon!

  4. I ADORE those hexagon backsplash tiles! Perfection w/ those maple (I think?) cabinets.
